Soccer Madness!

Friday, June 18, 2010

My husband has convinced himself that the World Cup is happening right now because of Father’s Day.  He thinks it is a personal gift.

Let’s face it, he’s a soccer fanatic – the year we married, he not only watched every soccer game of the World Cup; he taped each one so that he could watch them again later at his leisure!  So to see the U.S. – who back in 1986 had little chance of doing well – being competitive, is very gratifying.

It’s also fun to get to see our son play.  I mentioned that his team is in Wisconsin, hoping to win regionals and head on to nationals in Tennessee in a few weeks.

While he’s playing travel soccer right now, this fall will be his last high school season, and unless he goes on to a smaller college, he likely won’t continue his soccer career at the university level.  So we are relishing this time with him.

He watched the U.S. play today before heading out to play his own game which was ended short of full-time on account of thunderstorms…and just like the U.S., his game ended in a tie.  And just like the U.S., the next games will tell the final story…updates to come.

What do you get when you combine a talented artist…

…with four great animals?!   A successful studio space that’s what!

I had another “small world” experience recently when I began corresponding with a very talented jewelry designer who lives in Cambria, California.  It just so happens that I had been considering that as a vacation destination this summer, and it is also the location of a gallery that is thinking about carrying our work.

So when I clicked on Gwynnie’s blog, I already felt a connection.  Her work certainly cemented that feeling, as it’s truly lovely!

You will quickly note that she shares her studio with 2 cats and 2 dogs – and they are precious!  I asked her for some additional information about them, and she was kind enough to share the details below:

Q:  How many animals do you have?

A:  I have a wonderful family of 2 dogs, Louie and Lucy, and 2 cats, Bleu Kitty and Fatso Skinny.  Libby Lu, our 18-year-old cat, went to Kitty Heaven a few months ago and we all miss her terribly.  She was the matriarch of this motley crew and kept everyone in line!

Louie is 10 years old and a mini fox terrier.  He’s on meds due to a fused spine but he’s still very much a feisty terrier, even though he sits funny because of his condition.  He loves watching TV, especially the Animal Planet and The Dog Whisperer.

Lucy and Louie

Lucy is 5 years old and a rat terrier.  She was the runt of the litter and is about half the size for this breed.  She’s a tiny little girl and weighs about 9 pounds, but she’s all terrier and thinks she’s bigger than she is!  We rescued her from an awful breeder who had Lucy in a small wire cage that was off the ground on stilts.  The breeder was going to “get rid of her” because she didn’t like the breed and didn’t want a runt.  Lucy was so happy when her little feet finally touched grass after spending the first months of her life in that awful cage!

Bleu Kitty

Bleu Kitty is also 10 years old and a rescue.  He was living with other feral cats near a friend’s home and was a mess.  He was prone to eye infections and very skittish the first few years, but now he is a happy, healthy cat.  I’m not sure what breed he is but he does have tabby markings and a beautiful soft coat that is very fine.

Fatso Skinny

Fatso Skinny is 5 years old and a rag doll.  He was our neighbor’s cat but he fell in love with Lucy and always hung out with us.  When the neighbors moved they asked if we wanted him and of course we said yes.  He’s 20 pounds of pure kitty love!  He kept growing and growing so everyone started calling him Fatso.  His fur mats terribly and causes him a lot of discomfort so we give him a buzz cut once a year.  Underneath all that fur was a big cat not a fat cat, so that’s how he got the name Fatso Skinny.

Q:  Do they play an active role in your art business?

A:  Every one of them plays an active role in our studio space, which is also our home.  We live in a former shop that was converted into a living space with the living quarters upstairs and the studio downstairs.  My husband has one side of the studio for his antique clock business/music studio and I have the front half for my art business.

"Paper Circles" Earrings

When we come downstairs in the mornings to work Lucy and Louie are right there with us.  Lucy likes to race to the bottom of the stairs first and then takes her place on the sofa near my bench.  Louie slowly follows and the routine of a day’s work begins!

Sometimes one of the cats will race Lucy either up or down the stairs, and you have to be careful or they’ll take you out if you’re in their way.  Both the dogs and the cats are always with us.  My business includes my animals and it wouldn’t be the same without them.

Q:  Are there ways in which they inspire your work or assist you?

A:  I’m inspired by them daily because each one of them is a delight and a constant reminder that life is sweet. It’s never boring with four animals!

They chase things, they purr, they get frisky, they love me up, and they’re always happy to be with us.  Their companionship makes for a happy studio, which in turn makes for great creations!

The dogs help unpack boxes by inspecting everything and sniffing and pushing things aside.  Occasionally they knock something over and look at me like this was the plan all along.  And they’re very good about letting me know the UPS truck has arrived by barking.  When friends visit Lucy dances and they’re all genuinely happy to see someone, especially if a treat is involved!

"Lovely" Bracelet

The cats wander in and out, bringing the occasional “gift” of some poor rodent or just hanging out and observing what we’re working on.  If I ignore any one of them for too long the dogs will push up against me or drop a ball at my feet, and the cats will jump on my bench or meow until I stop what I’m doing and pay attention to them.  They can be quite demanding!

Q:  Is there anything else you’d like to share regarding having animals in your studio?

A:  I love being a self-employed artist and cannot imagine my studio without the companionship of my furry little kiddos.  Creating can be solitary, but if you have a studio full of love and happy animals than all is good and you’re never really alone.

I couldn’t agree with Gwynnie more!  :)

Updates from the Dog’s World…

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Well!  Last night was an exciting one!  See below for our very own “Close Encounter” with a nearly “Wizard of Oz” or “Twister” moment (see how I managed to crowd not one, not two, but THREE movie references in there?!)

We’ve had LOTS of severe thunderstorm warnings here of late, cloudbursts, high winds, etc.  Last night was a new one, however.  Straight line winds upwards of 70 mph took down a tree in our neighbor’s yard, causing it to crack, then ricochet off of her house, then ours…and coming to a landing right in between the two!

Jasmine surveys the damage...

The pay-off was an unbelievable double rainbow that my son shot with his cell phone after things calmed down a little…I’ll try to download that later today.

Owen checks out the changed landscape...

Those are our deck stairs on the right...

The rainbow helped to prove the silver lining theory, as did the impromptu and hilarious shadow puppet show the 3 of us had before bed after the power went out…my husband can make a mean manatee with his big toe.  I have no photo proof of that, you’ll just have to take my word for it.

The dogs were NOT happy with all of the storm sounds…but ended up having a very good night’s sleep, exhausted after all of the excitement passed.  And seemed completely unsure what to think this a.m. in daylight to find a huge new tree lying prone in the yard…

Weekly Giveaway for 6/18!

Monday, June 14, 2010

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a full week since we posted a give-away!  Sorry to everyone for the computer problems that got in the way last week – and thanks for sticking with us to see this week’s item!  :)

I admit that despite the week away, I still find myself seeking a little vacation time…I guess it was all of those store items we were working on that did it, but since they pay the bills, I certainly won’t complain!

Nonetheless, a little trip to Europe wouldn’t be out of hand, would it, particularly if we could stay in a castle or two and do some awesome sightseeing?  So try these on for size…

This week’s give-away is a 4-card set that highlights European castles and cathedrals – any of which I can imagine visiting.

Envision yourself looking up at the view above, and sending a photo to your envious friends…

Or waking up to a strong cup of cappuccino, clean air, and these lovely gardens…

Maybe you’ll take an afternoon stroll down to the lake…

Or hit the snooze button and snuggle into the down comforter to keep your toes warm in this beautiful castle…

Regardless of where YOUR dreams take you on vacation, this card set will allow you to indulge in a little fantasy along the way.

To sign up, simply add “Give-away – 6/18″ to the comments section below before 5 p.m. ET on Friday, June 18th.  The Sleeping Dogs will complete their usual duty of picking a winner at random, and I will announce it on  Friday.  Arrivaderci!

We’re Baaaaack! :)

Friday, June 11, 2010

Sorry for all of the computer challenges this week – it’s hard to believe that only a year ago, we didn’t even HAVE a Blog, and this week I felt so lost without it!

Obviously, it’s kind of late for a give-away this week, so we’re going to pretend this week just never happened (which also means that I still have a whole week to meet deadlines for next Monday!  Or not…)

I will be back with our regular schedule, fingers crossed!, starting this Sunday, June 13th.

In the meanwhile, check out this MSN article about an 11-year old girl from Islip, NY – which just happens to also be the home of Altamira Gallery, one of our stores!  :) – and how she has raised $80,000 to help the birds involved in the Gulf Oil Spill through her art.  Very inspirational, don’t miss it!

Quick update…

Monday, June 7, 2010

…borrowing a library computer to make a quick post to announce computer challenges – aargh!

That’s why no give-away post yesterday or today.  I’m hoping things will be fixed soon once the Geek Squad or Nerd Herd comes out!  :)

More posts as soon as things are back to normal, I promise…
