Did you realize that there are people who spend time trying to predict, and then lobby for, specific colors to be the style “new trends”?!?
It’s true, and it happens each year, as different designers pick colors based upon “emerging colors” from the prior year, and combine that with a sense of where they see color design going in the upcoming year.
At an annual conference, specially picked designers form a committee that lobbies for their picks…and at the end of the 2-day process, a new series of colors is unleashed upon the world!
IF you want to be truly cutting-edge, it is these colors that you will then use in your home and fashion designs for the coming year…and let’s face it, that’s EXACTLY what the design industry does!
You can see the 2010 Color Forecast on the Sherwin-Williams paint web site…I particularly like the varying categories and associated descriptions of the collections.
For example, as just one of the four categories (the others are “Refreshed”, “Simplified”, and “Treasured“) ”Rooted” is described as:
“It’s human instinct to seek the safety of the tribe. In today’s complicated world, there’s something deeply satisfying about re-exploring the world’s oldest, most enduring cultures. African, Aboriginal and Native American influences are converging to create new tribal style with a drumbeat all its own. The colors are rich and earthy with a hint of mystery. The appeal is as natural as the elements.”
I consider myself very open-minded about color, and love it in all of it’s incarnations. And I have to say that I AM particularly fond of this year’s color choices…but I’m still trying to figure out how color can project a “hint of mystery”. I remain slightly dubious.
But don’t mind me – check it out for yourself at:
