When I first met my husband, I was fascinated by the juxtaposition of two seemingly unrelated loves in his life – art and soccer. Through the years, this dedication has continued, one taking priority over another depending upon the season.
He has now coached at every level – youth, high school, Div. III and Div. I college soccer - and is currently juggling three youth soccer teams of different ages and genders one minute; then switching back to the business of exercising his “right brain” thinking to produce the loveliest products imaginable for the Studio.
I’ve come to realize, however, that there are similarities between these apparently disparate interests (besides the fact that he makes AWESOME soccer cards!
). I think both require similar character traits that he has in abundance – namely creativity and passion.
His creativity comes out both in the way he comes up with new ideas for the studio, and the exuberance with which he presents them; and in the way he prepares drills and practices that bring out the very best of individual players, depending upon their personalities, their abilities, etc. And if you’ve ever tried to push a reluctant teenager into trying to do something, you know the latter requires significant creativity as well!
His passion is evident in all he does. He loves making beautiful artwork – he is proud of his new pieces, and likes to show them to me as soon as they are complete! And his passion for soccer is evident in the way he can spend a full weekend at a college soccer showcase – then return home and immediately turn on the TV to watch soccer YET again! It’s an obsession, let’s face it!
Perhaps that what makes him so interesting – and frankly, I wish I knew more people like him. He is no “one-trick pony”, but has certain values that permeate all he does, no matter how different those activities are on the surface. We should all be so lucky…

You aren’t kidding – those are awesome cards!
I find that art (creativity) has a way of oozing into every aspect of life. There are lessons learned in life that carry into our creative works and vice versa.
I LOVE that you mentioned “Renaissance Man” – did you check out my blog? I was recommended a book yesterday, “The Renaissance Soul”. I checked it out from the library (sorry – I’ll return it soon if you want to read it!)
, and feel like I’ve found SUCH a fitting title.
(By the way, I haven’t tried the adhesive yet, but am still looking forward to!!)
