Wednesday Artist Highlight – Toney Robertson, Fine Woodworking

I’m glad to have the chance to tell you more about this week’s Giveaway artist Toney Robertson.  I mentioned that Toney is an Indiana Artisan…and I was thrilled to discover that Sleeping Dogs Studio and he have more than that in common.

As a child, his mother told him that anything worth doing was worth doing right – a mantra my own Mom passed on from my Grandfather.  It’s clear that Toney is “doing things right” with his art pieces.  He credits this phrase with instilling the strong work ethic that carries over to his woodworking today.

Toney uses wood indigenous to northeastern Indiana in his work whenever he can. Most recently he has been working with spalted maple, cherry and walnut.  The results are elegant and dramatic.

I shared reader questions with Toney, and he was gracious enough to answer them below:

1)  Where did you come up with the name for your art business?

I don’t really have a name for my business.  I just use my name and fine woodworking.  That about covers what I do.

 2) What do you most enjoy about being an artist?

The creation process.  I really enjoy thinking about a piece in my head and then being able to translate that to the real world.

 3)    Where do you show most of your work?

At present, I have pieces in galleries in Logansport and Ft. Wayne.  I also have two pieces in the Indiana State Museum at the present time.

4) Can you tell us a little bit about how you started your business?

I have enjoyed woodworking since I was young.  I am/was in construction and with the faltering economy I looked to woodworking to garner some additional income.

I think we’d all agree that Toney’s particularly well-suited to his second career – his lovely work is a testament to that.

Renaissance Man…

When I first met my husband, I was fascinated by the juxtaposition of two seemingly unrelated loves in his life – art and soccer.  Through the years, this dedication has continued, one taking priority over another depending upon the season.

He has now coached at every level – youth, high school, Div. III and Div. I college soccer - and is currently juggling three youth soccer teams of different ages and genders one minute; then switching back to the business of exercising his “right brain” thinking to produce the loveliest products imaginable for the Studio.

I’ve come to realize, however, that there are similarities between these apparently disparate interests (besides the fact that he makes AWESOME soccer cards!  :)  ).  I think both require similar character traits that he has in abundance – namely creativity and passion.

Set of Four Soccer Cards

His creativity comes out both in the way he comes up with new ideas for the studio, and the exuberance with which he presents them; and in the way he prepares drills and practices that bring out the very best of individual players, depending upon their personalities, their abilities, etc.  And if you’ve ever tried to push a reluctant teenager into trying to do something, you know the latter requires significant creativity as well!

His passion is evident in all he does.  He loves making beautiful artwork – he is proud of his new pieces, and likes to show them to me as soon as they are complete!  And his passion for soccer is evident in the way he can spend a full weekend at a college soccer showcase – then return home and immediately turn on the TV to watch soccer YET again!  It’s an obsession, let’s face it!

Perhaps that what makes him so interesting – and frankly, I wish I knew more people like him.  He is no “one-trick pony”, but has certain values that permeate all he does, no matter how different those activities are on the surface.  We should all be so lucky…

Guest Artist Giveaway – Toney Robertson

I am so pleased to be able to present you with another fantastic give-away for this week – a gift to you from Toney Robertson of Galveston, Indiana.

Toney Robertson Original

This lovely wooden piece was hand-turned on a lathe by Toney in the same workshop that his father built for him as a boy - and even though the photo is lovely, it honestly doesn’t do the piece justice!  If you like clean, beautiful lines, and the warm color of finely polished wood, you will treasure this give-away.  The piece is approximately 5″ in diameter.

Toney has had his work recognized through the Indiana Artisan program,  a juried process that encourages the recognition of high quality, Indiana-made goods.

Toney comments ”“I’m a minimalist. If I could make the perfect piece, it would look like the wood grew that way in nature.”  I think you’ll agree that this piece is pretty close to perfection!

His style results in pieces with gentle curves and shallow design, which Toney says is somewhat Asian inspired. The finished product is a one-of-a-kind piece that is beautiful yet practical.

You’ll get the chance to learn even more about Toney when he answers your questions this coming Wednesday in our Guest Artist spotlight.

In the meanwhile, sign up to win this unforgettable wooden bowl by clicking on the comments section immediately below this entry (i.e., where it mentions the # of comments already made…).  As you write your comment, make sure you add in your e-mail, and the words “Give-away – 3/12″.  As usual, you will need to enter by 5 p.m. on 3/12 in order to be considered, and the winner will be selected at random.

A special thanks to Toney for his generous gift to our readers!

Lady Jasmine, Sleeping Dog Extraordinaire…

When my husband and I moved into our first house in Bloomington, our son was about 5 years old.  He had been waiting for this house so that he could get his own dog, and we planned to do lots of homework about what breeds of dog were best for young families.

So naturally, we walked into the shelter, and walked out again with the first puppy we saw.

That puppy was Jasmine.  Our son named her after Princess Jasmine in the Disney movie “Aladdin” because even as a puppy, she had dark rims around her eyes that made her look as if she was wearing kohl eyeliner – just like Princess Jasmine.

She’s come a long way through the years.  She’s now 12 years old, her muzzle is grey, and she even has a grey “skunk” streak in her tail!

She’s a good guard dog – she protects her family and her house very fiercely – particularly from squirrels and deer she sees in the yard.

She still goes to sleep on her dog pillow in my son’s room every night.  And then sneaks off to the guest room so that she can take advantage of the “world’s largest dog bed” – (I’m convinced that she thinks we put this there for her) – but ONLY after she’s certain that he’s safely asleep.

Yes, she’s mellowed.  But she still likes to play when she’s in the mood.  On her walks, she will jump into the air the whole way home, trying to see if she can distract you enough to make you suddenly veer off into a longer walk without noticing.

And what does she do when she gets home?  Well – a dog this lovely has to have her beauty sleep.

Marty wins collage worth millions!

OK, maybe not exactly…

But I did say that I hope this foray into collage work would someday be profitable!  :)   Our winner this week is Marty (meschick@indiana.edu).  Congratulations, and be sure to e-mail me at carolyn@sleepingdogsstudio.net  so that I can confirm how to get it to you ASAP!

Check in with us again this coming Sunday, when we are honored to host our second guest artist giveaway.  I’m confident that the lovely item will be something you will all be drooling over!

One last thought to leave you with related to our give-aways - be greedy!  :)   I have heard from so many friends, acquaintances, co-workers, fellow artists, etc., who have said that because they know us they feel badly about entering to win.

Actually, we feel as if we know ALL of our customers!  We’re a small business after all, and we pride ourselves on remembering our conversations with you, your likes and dislikes, etc.  Because you happen to also be a friend, an artist yourself, etc. – that’s no reason not to join us when we’re having so much fun planning the give-aways we’re hosting!

If you still feel badly, mention the blog and give-away to one friend who doesn’t yet know about us…that’s more than enough – life is about giving, and about relationships – and our give-aways allow us to do both.  It’s already been more fun than we could have ever hoped!

Have a great weekend, and tune in tomorrow for a special studio animal feature on one of Sleeping Dogs Studios very own - the lovely lady Jasmine.  :)

Thursday Tutorial…the right adhesive makes a difference

We get asked a lot what we use when it comes to adhesives.  I know that all artists differ re: their favorite tools, so certainly don’t take our word alone re: what to use!  Nonetheless, after literally thousands of collages, cards, frames, boxes and earring holders made, there ARE clear preferences we have developed.

The standards in our arsenal, the “BIG GUNS” of our glue world, are based upon the following criteria:

1) Toxicity – or lack thereof!  We try whenever we can to use low-scent, low-chemical products.

2) Archival and effective - people expect our products to last a long, long time.  Sometimes they frame our cards…so the last thing they want to see is a piece of this “mini-collage” they’ve just purchased falling off!

And, frankly?  It’s pretty much an even combination of 1 & 2 before we really feel good about buying it in bulk!  The key is to find something that is good for the environment and not harmful to you, the artist!; while still proving as effective as possible.  And with our top four (two for dry applications, two for wet applications), we think we’ve done that.

With this in mind, here’s what we’d recommend:

“Dry” Adhesives:

Let’s say you’re gluing down a piece of paper to a card.  For my money, the best option available is Tombow permanent adhesive.  We buy refills for these dispensers by the gross!  But even if you’re buying one, don’t get too turned off by the price – it’s worth it.

This stuff lays down a perfect line of archival-quality adhesive – very much like a line of double-stick tape that practically fuses with the papers you place on top and bottom.  You purchase the dispenser – and then can use it pretty much forever and just buy refills, which are considerably less expensive than the dispenser version.

Tombow Mono Adhesive Glue Refill

When adding embellishments, on the other hand, I choose pretty much any brand of the adhesive our paper seller lovingly called “snot dots”!  Their real name is glue dots, and they come in different sizes, and heights – from flat to pop-up if you want a 3-dimensional look.

Craft Glue Dots are great for home decor and woodworking projects.

Bond tiny embellishments using Mini Glue Dots on sheets.

The advantage of this product is that it does a great job of holding unusually-shaped embellishments in place – particularly on cards.  So if you’re looking to affix a button to a card, or a flower to a collage - reach for a “snot dot”!

Next week’s tutorial will talk a little bit about our favorite WET adhesives – never heard of a non-toxic super-glue?!?  Then you’ll want to tune in next Thursday!

You never thought glue could be so fascinating, did you?!?  :)

Counting to Ten…

I’ve often wondered what happens to the brain at age 16 or 17 that makes it move to a different beat.  Apparently, science has recently answered that question!

My husband told me that he heard a  National Public Radio report yesterday a.m. that explained a variety of teenage behavior (you can see the new story in its entirety at: http://www.wbur.org/npr/124119468).

The phrase that caught me is one I sometimes use with my own 17-year old, in which one of the parents profiled talked about her mantra with her son being, “What were you thinking?!”.  This particular parent, Frances Jensen, who is also a Harvard researcher, decided to explore what makes teenagers act as they do – and her results were fascinating.

As the NPR report indicates, ”Jensen says scientists used to think human brain development was pretty complete by age 10. Or as she puts it, that ‘a teenage brain is just an adult brain with fewer miles on it.’  But it’s not. To begin with, she says, a crucial part of the brain — the frontal lobes — are not fully connected.

Numbers

This also may explain why teenagers often seem so maddeningly self-centered. ‘You think of them as these surly, rude, selfish people,’ Jensen says. ‘Well, actually, that’s the developmental stage they’re at. They aren’t yet at that place where they’re thinking about — or capable, necessarily, of thinking about the effects of their behavior on other people. That requires insight.’ And insight requires — that’s right — a fully connected frontal lobe.

This was a fun topic of conversation over dinner between my husband, my son and I…and we resolved in the end that if the above is true, we’re actually luckier than most…so next time I hear myself saying “What were you thinking?!?”, I’m going to try and count to ten first…

New directions…

My husband is an amazing collage artist, and he’s always saying to me that I ought to try my hand at making our greeting cards on a larger scale.  Somehow I’ve never really had the guts, however…and then I thought – well, maybe having something different for the give-away should be my motivation!

So – here it is, and I hope you like it!  Meet “Polly # 5″…

She is a hand-tinted vintage image that is layered onto a 12″ X 12″ canvas covered with a variety of scrap paper, including some of my favorite vibrant patterns and old sheet music “fogged” out with sheets of white tissue paper.

I don’t know why exactly – but I like the #5, so made my own stencil (yes, I really cut that out myself!), then spray painted it on one side.  It needed something to balance it out – so then came the drips down the right side (I had the most fun with that part – messy!), and a string of buttons.

On the sides, there is a zig-zag of black paper interspersed with the white sheet music.  So there is no need to frame it if you don’t want to…

This is perfect for someone who loves color – and I think would look great in a child’s room.  Anyone wanting to enter simply needs to add a comment below with their e-mail, and the words “Give-away – 3/5″ – yes, it’s March already! – in the copy.  Your entry needs to be submitted by no later than 5 p.m. on March 5th to be eligible, and the winner will be chosen at random at that time.

I think I have a lot more to learn when it comes to collage work – but that’s the beauty of art - it’s always a process, always a learning experience, always a chance to push the limits of your creativity to the limit.  And who knows, this might be one of those “I knew her when” pieces that will be appraised for millions at an “Antiques Roadshow” in 2035…hope springs eternal.

Important Correction!

For those of you that didn’t see Chris’ response in the comments, that totally adorable cat that I featured on the give-away winner entry was in fact, NOT Pike, but instead Igity, her son’s cat.  So – still adorable – but not the cat that encouraged Chris to enter the give-away.

Instead, below is Pike, the studio cat and forceful personality that convinced her.  What a great photo, isn’t it?!

And he’s obviously not only quite the character, but generous too, as he has told Chris that she can use the box she won to hold catnip for the non-studio cats as long as he also gets a taste once in awhile.  (I’m going to really have to break the news about the catnip carefully to Owen…that might push him over the edge, as he thinks boxes only have one function and that’s holding dog treats!)

Regardless, never let it be said that the Sleeping Dogs Studio owners (at least not the human ones) are not cat fans – we feel they deserve equal time even if we’re still working on convincing Jasmine and Owen.

Congrats again to Chris and to Wehaf!  Off to work on my “special prize” for tomorrow’s give-away (I hope I’m not building it up too much!)
